The ideal colleague has four legs, sheds on the rug, and snores softly under the desk during quarterly reviews.
Working alongside a dog changes the entire rhythm of the workday for the better. For starters, their conflict resolution skills are unmatched. When an email tone is completely unhinged or a spreadsheet refuses to cooperate, you can read your unfiltered, exasperated draft out loud to them. They will listen with deep, soulful empathy, never judge your phrasing, and take every corporate secret straight to their grave.
Then there is the built-in wellness program. Human coworkers might peer-pressure you into skipping lunch to hit a deadline; a dog coworker will rest an immovable chin squarely on your keyboard to remind you that 2:00 PM requires fresh air, sunshine, and a stretch. They are aggressive about work-life balance in the best way possible.
Of course, they aren’t without their workplace quirks. Their understanding of personal space during snack breaks is nonexistent, and they treat the mail carrier with the kind of urgent hostility usually reserved for hostile corporate takeovers.
Still, between the dramatic mid-morning sighs and the silent foot-warming duties, morale has never been higher. They may be totally unqualified on paper, but they are easily the best hire I’ve ever made.
