Finding My Way to the Pews: On Grandma Clair and Divine Intervention

I debated for a long time whether or not to write about this. Faith is personal, sometimes complicated, and putting it out into the world feels uniquely vulnerable. But leaving it out would mean leaving out the exact moment the fog finally began to lift.

I was baptized as a baby, but my family never forced a path on me. They believed my spiritual life was mine to choose whenever I was ready. For decades, I didn’t think twice about it. Life got heavy, self-doubt crept in, and I spent years wandering through a fog of depression and frustration, disconnected from myself and anything bigger.

Then came December 2025.

Out of nowhere, I was hit with an overwhelming, undeniable curiosity about going to church. It wasn’t a calculated decision; it was just a quiet, persistent pull that I couldn’t shake. So, I decided to go to Mass with my Grandma Clair.

The moment I stepped inside, something broke open. I looked around the room and was immediately struck by how genuinely happy everyone looked. It wasn’t performative; it was an unmistakable, grounded peace. Before I could even process it, that exact same wave of happiness washed over me.

These people were complete strangers, yet they didn’t treat me like one. There was no judgment, no side-glances, and not a single ounce of pushiness. They simply welcomed me with open arms and let me be.

That Sunday changed everything.

I started going back every single week. For the first time in years—maybe in my entire adult life—I found a genuine spark of interest in something outside my own head. Sitting in those pews gave me an anchor, a sense of stillness, and a quiet strength I didn’t know I possessed.

Looking back now, I don’t call it a coincidence or a random whim. I call it divine intervention. A quiet, gentle hand reaching directly into the mess of my life right when I needed saving the most.
